How to Clean a Remington 870
1. Wash the barrel. sanitize the barrel
Spray the barrel with some of the cleaner/protectant, then thread the bore snake into it from the breach end. Till the interior of the barrel seems spotless and bright, repeatedly pull the bore snake through it. Don’t forget to clean the barrel’s outside as well.
2. Scrub the shotgun’s internal and external surfaces. surface cleaning the firearm
On the cleaning cloth and/or patches, spritz a little of the solvent or protector. Use these to clean the gun’s inner and external surfaces. The purpose is to clean the gun, not to increase the stock price of the solvent/protectant maker, thus a little goes a long way. For more than 30 cleanings of my Remington 870 XCS Marine Magnum, I’ve used the same can of Breakfree CLP.
3. To clean the trigger group.
Make sure the safety is engaged before pressing the trigger to avoid the hammer striking your finger and inflicting severe pain and damage. The trigger group might also sustain injury. In fact, as previously noted, the hammer shouldn’t even be cocked; instead, maintain the safety engaged as a precaution.
According to Remington, their proprietary solvent/protectant brand RemOil should be used to clean the trigger group. I use it to clean my trigger group because I have a can of it. However, I sincerely doubt that using RemOil is necessary. Simply spray the solvent over the trigger group, shake it off, and let it to dry to clean it.
